  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 23 apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • ½ cup brown sugar (for batter)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sour cream or plain yogurt
  • ¼ cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter with brown sugar until bubbly. Pour into the prepared pan and top with apple slices.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. In another bowl, cream softened butter with sugars until fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time and then add vanilla.
  5. Mix in sour cream and milk until combined. Gently fold in dry ingredients until just mixed.
  6. Spread the batter over the apple layer and bake for about 40–45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let cool for 10–15 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.
