- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
- 1 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed, strained)
- 1 tbsp orange zest
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 3 large egg yolks
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 8 oz (225 g) dark chocolate, chopped
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- Fresh orange slices or candied orange peel
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla; mix until smooth. Stir in hot coffee until fully incorporated.
- Divide batter among prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely in pans before transferring to a cooling rack.
- For the orange filling, combine sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in a saucepan. Gradually whisk in orange juice and cook over medium heat until thickened. Stir in orange zest and butter; cool completely.
- For ganache, heat heavy cream until steaming but not boiling; pour over chopped chocolate and let sit for 2 minutes. Stir until smooth and add butter.
- Assemble by layering cake with orange filling between layers and topping with ganache.
