  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 pinch celery seed (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons water + 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F.
  2. In a resealable bag, combine flour, salt, pepper, and garlic. Add cubed steak and shake to coat evenly.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a heavy pot over medium-high heat and brown the coated steaks on both sides; transfer to a plate.
  4. Sauté onion, celery, bell pepper, and mushrooms in the same pot until softened. Stir in garlic and tomato paste.
  5. Add diced tomatoes, beef broth, thyme, sugar, and optional celery seed; return browned steaks to the pot.
  6. Cover and bake for 1½ to 2 hours until fork-tender.
  7. To thicken gravy: Combine cornstarch and water; stir into gravy on stovetop until thickened.
  8. Serve steaks with gravy alongside your choice of sides.
